Description

Sombrero Salsa Red Coneflower

General Information

Sombrero Salsa Red Coneflower is a beautiful plant that can be placed into many landscape settings.  With the smaller size of this plant, it can be placed in containers or in some sort of tight spot where another plant may be too large.  The leaves of this plant can grow up to 7 inches long.  They are ovate in shape, and have a medium green color.  The flowers grow on sturdy stems above the foliage.  The flower petals have an orangish-red color with upwards of 24 petals on each flower.  The center of the flower is a brown colored cone, in the shape of a sombrero.  The flowers bloom all summer, and even sporadically until the first frost.  The center cones contain seeds, which is an attraction for birds during the winter time.

Additional Information

Echinacea purpurea ‘Balsomsed’ grows to a height of 18 to 24 inches, with a spread of 12 to 18 inches.  It is recommended for climate zones 3 to 9.  It can grow in full sun to part shade.  Salsa Red can grow in poor to average soil conditions and has low to average moisture needs.  This flower can be used for both cut and dried flower purposes.  No disease or insect issues.  This plant can be divided every 3 to 4 years.
