    ‘Twas the Night Before Snowfall

‘Twas the night before snowfall, when all through Grimm’s Gardens, Not a plant was stirring, not even a grass. The trucks were parked and washed with care, In hopes that a blizzard would soon be there.   The employees were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of ice melt, danced in their heads. [...]

    A Story of Blue

There is nothing that compares to fresh, warm blueberries picked early in the morning while the dew is still shimmering.  These berries are a favorite among many who have made the trek to Grimm’s Garden’s blueberry patch in early July.  We have been picking blueberries for many years now and usually there are clusters of [...]

    Landscape Walls

There are many different options for landscape retaining and sitting walls.  Check out some of the ones we have built! Native Limestone Limestone is a favorite for rural settings.  The natural stone has a rustic but chic look that can be used for retaining soil or as a place to sit next to a patio.  Being [...]

    Common Pine Diseases

There are several common diseases that attack Pine trees in the Mid-West.  Perhaps the most well-known is Pine Wilt; however there are a few others that are more common but less severe.  In this article, we will cover the basic signs and symptoms of these problems and give some ideas on the best course of [...]

    Landscape Lighting Techniques

Up and down lighting are the two basic techniques for any lighting design. If you think about it, all lights are either mounted on the ground and face up or are mounted up high and shining down. Within each of these categories are many, many different fixtures. Up Lighting Up lighting occurs when a fixture [...]

    Lighting Types

Types of Fixtures: Path Path lights are one of the most familiar types of lights. Many people have seen the LED or solar powered path lights sold at big box stores. While these will successfully light a walkway so visitors do not trip, they have a lot lacking in terms of beauty. I’ll not bore [...]

    Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting is one of my favorite parts of the landscape. This may seem like an odd comment coming from a horticulture graduate, but it is true. There is something about landscape lighting that finishes the look of a professional landscape if it is done right. This is especially important for anyone who works 8-5 [...]

    Time to Plant Spring Bulbs

One of my favorite parts of springtime is watching the spring bulbs suddenly appear and then flower.  There is nothing that says spring quite like a new crocus or tulip. This is the point where a little effort this fall will pay off huge dividends this spring.  I love cutting some blooms  and bringing them [...]

    Mum’s the Word

Fall is such a lovely time of year! I love watching the birds look for berries, the wind blowing red, yellow, and orange leaves across the drive. I even enjoy raking leaves. The rich earthy hues that the world takes on are so wonderful. I like watching the sway of grasses in the wind, the [...]
