Profile
Rebecca Drew graduated from Kansas State University in 2013 with a B.S. in Landscape Design and a minor in Business. She grew up in the country near Scandia, Kansas and has always enjoyed spending time outdoors. Growing up she could be found climbing the pine tree just outside her house. Spring Clean-Up

The first warm days of spring draw me outside to clean up the yard. As I do so, I am constantly looking for little sprouts of all the bulbs I planted last fall. If you don’t have any bulbs planted, make a mental note to do so next year. The rewards of a fall planting [...]

    Garden Cooks: Cauliflower

Cauliflower is a cool season vegetable that is best planted when the temperatures rise to about seventy degrees. This happens in Kansas around the end of March. Start your own seed near the beginning of February. If you were late planting seed, stop by Grimm’s Gardens and pick up a small plant ready for transplant. [...]

    Composting

Why not make 2015 the first year you compost? If you are anything like me, you throw away way too much food waste. When I make mashed potatoes, the peels go down the disposal. Our fresh produce sometimes goes bad in the refrigerator before we get it all consumed. My husband loves bananas and so [...]

    Gardens are so… Square!

For the creative-types like myself, there comes a point when you are tired of a standard square garden and everything planted in a row. This is the moment when it is necessary to combine garden and landscape into a seamless backyard beauty. My plan for this year is to plant strawberries under our fruit trees. [...]

    Happy New Year!

It is the time for reflecting on last year and laying out the plan for a new year. Have you slowed down to remember all the joys you had last year? I barely have. When I do pause for a moment, my thoughts tend to remember big moments such as traveling, or family celebrations. I [...]

What Will Grow Near a Black Walnut Tree?

Black Walnut trees are wonderful if you are a cabinet maker, eat the walnuts, or leave them as forage for wildlife, or use the husks to make a colorfast dye.  But if you are a gardener, they provide a challenge, to say the least. A toxic chemical, juglone, diffuses from the roots into the soil, [...]

What Stays, What Goes: Pruning Technique

Do you have a young tree, just a few years planted in your yard?  Maybe you have a medium sized tree that is rubbing against your house and making creepy sounds.  If you have either, you probably need to prune.  The question is, “Where do I start??” To begin: First you need to inspect your [...]

    Rhubarb Planting Instructions

Rhubarb crowns have to be planted shallow. At least ¼ to 1/3 of the crown surface should be above the ground level when properly planted. If the bud itself is below the soil line it may rot off and fail to grow.  We have seen fall planted crowns frost heave and roll around on [...]
