Switchgrass- Native
General Information
Switchgrass is a warm season grass that forms a columnar clump. Green leaves turn yellow, orange in fall. Branched flower heads rise above the foliage. These finely textured heads have a pink-purple tint that fades in the fall. Seeds plumes persist into winter and provide food for birds. May be grown from seed. Great for native gardens and prairie or meadow plantings. Can be used in cut or dried flower arrangements. Plant along slopes or ditches to help control erosion.
Additional Information
Panicum virgatum grows best in Full Sun. It will grow 2-4′ tall with a spread of 18-24″‘. Plant in zones 5 to 9. Drought tolerant. Black walnut tolerant. Tolerates air pollution. Native to some areas of the Midwest.

Easy to grow in average, well drained soil. Tolerates a variety of soil including dry, but prefers moist soil. Can be grown in clay or sandy soil. No serious insect or disease problems. May be susceptible to rust in hot, humid climates. Cut back to the ground in late winter or early spring. NOT AVAILABLE FOR SALE IN THESE US STATES AND TERRITORIES: AK, HI, GM, PR, VI.
