Desert Plains Fountain Grass
Desert Plains Fountain Grass is a great plant that will fit well in different areas of your landscape. It is a larger sized perennial fountain grass, growing to 4 feet tall and wide. The showy, bottlebrush shaped flower heads emerge in the summer. They begin with a smoky purple color, before aging to tan. The foliage is narrow, taking on an arching form, while growing in an overall upright habit. During the spring and summer, the leaves are deep green in color. In the late summer the leaves take a red tone before transitioning to orange and gold in the fall.
Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Desert Plains’ grows to a height of 3 to 4 feet, with a similar overall spread. It is recommended for USDA climate zones 5 to 9. It is said to grow best in full sunlight. Desert Plains grows best in well drained soils, with average amounts of moisture.
