Black Velvet Gooseberry
General Information
Black Velvet Gooseberry is a fruiting shrub. It will have a nice upright form, with great production and ornamental appeal. The foliage is a nice deep green color. It will give the shrub a nice appearance through the growing seasons. The berries of the Black Velvet Gooseberry are larger in size. They ripening to reddish-black in color, produced in abundance later than other gooseberries. The will have nice, sweet taste, similar to blueberries or grapes. This plant is self fertile, but will produce better with another plant, like Pixwell or Hinnomaki Red. This gooseberry does have thorns, so take care in siting the plant and when picking the fruits.
Additional Information
Ribes uva-crispa ‘Black Velvet’ will be 4 to 5 feet wide, with a width of 2 to 3 feet. It is recommended for USDA climate zones 3 to 8. It will do well in full sunlight conditions. Black Velvet Gooseberry will grow well with average amounts of moisture in well draining soils.
