The Sour Montmorency Cherry Tree has a fruit that has bright red skin, yellow flesh, and a clear juice. The tree is a heavy bearer with a long ripening season from late June to early July. The Sour Montmorency Cherry Tree is by far the most popular sour cherry in the United States and Canada, and it is extensively used in cherry pies, as well as jams and preserves.

The Sour Montmorency Cherry Tree is a self-fertile tree and does not require a pollinator. The Sour Montmorency Cherry has also been promoted as a healthful food, due to several purported health benefits. It can reach a height of between 16-18 ft tall and a spread of 16-20 ft wide. It is hardy in zone 4-7.
