Description

Bloodgood London Sycamore

General Information

Bloodgood London Sycamore is a great tree that fits well in many different landscape settings.  It is a large tree, 70 foot tall, so it must be sited with care.  Being so tall and wide, this makes for an excellent shade tree.  It grows in a broadly pyramidal fashion, with nice branching, giving the tree a good, full look.  This full canopy creates great cover and nesting areas for birds.  The leaves for the tree are large, with a similar appearance to maple leaves.  The leaves have a good dark green color during the growing season, before turning a nice yellow color in the autumn.  The bark of the tree creates a good deal of interest as well.  The outer bark is brown in color and peels to reveal creamy white inner bark.  This creates a great contrast to the dark green leaves and gives the tree good winter interest as well.

Additional Information

Platanus x acerifolia ‘Bloodgood’ grows to a height of 50 to 80 feet, with a spread of 40 to 70 feet.  It is recommended for climate zones 5 to 8.  It likes to grow in full sunlight.  It grows best in well drained soils with moderate amounts of moisture, but is very tolerant of less ideal conditions.  This tree is said to have better resistance to anthracnose than most of this species.  This tree has a good growth rate, even under difficult urban conditions.
