Description

Klehm’s Improved Bechtel Crabapple

General Information

Klehm’s Improved Bechtel Crabapple is a great tree that would work well in many different areas of your landscape.  It is a smaller sized ornamental tree, growing to 20 feet in height.  The tree tends to grow in a nice, rounded form.  The limbs tend to grow fairly low on the tree, but grow in a somewhat ascending fashion.  This helps give the tree a good full look.  The leaves tend to be moderate in size, with an oval form.  They have rounded serrations along the edges, with a nice deep green color.  They take on a beautiful orangish-red color in the fall.  The flowers emerge mid spring from pink to red buds.  The double flowers have a light pink color and bloom profusely all over the tree, creating a wonderful display.

Additional Information

Malus ioensis ‘Klehm’s Improved Bechtel’ grows to a height of 16 to 20 feet, with a spread of 16 to 18 feet.  It is recommended for climate zones 4 to 8.  It likes to grow in full sunlight.  Klehm’s likes to grow in well drained soils, with moderate amounts of moisture.  It can take some damage from cedar apple rust, but has great resistance to powdery mildew.
