General Information
Heavy Metal Switchgrass is a plant that has multiple seasons of interest. It is a cultivar of a native switchgrass, giving it many great qualities that the native plants provide. The stems grow in an upright fashion and tend to keep a column form. The grass has bluish-green colors with an grey metallic hue, thus giving it the name of 'Heavy Metal'. In the summertime, airy pink flowers form on the end of the stems. This gives way seeds as the season continues. The grass turns to a yellow color in the fall, fading to a neutral beige color over the winter. The seeds will persist over winter, which can provide birds with a source of food. All summer and through the winter, the switchgrass should retain its columnar form.
Additional Information
Panicum virgatum 'Heavy Metal' grows to a height of 4 to 5 feet, with a spread of 1 to 2 feet. It is recommended for climate zones 5 to 9. It grows best in full sunlight. Heavy Metal likes average to moist water conditions and can grow well in a variety of soil conditions. It can be left over winter to provide visual interest, but can be trimmed down in early winter to early spring. It can self seed in certain conditions, but as it is with many cultivars, it usually does not come true to form.
