Description
Goldmound Spirea
General Information
The Goldmound Spirea is a great shrub that would fit well in many different areas in your landscape. This is a smaller sized shrub at 3 feet tall and 4 wide. This size gives it the opportunity to be placed in small landscape areas, in borders, along sidewalks or many other spots. This shrub grows in an upright mounded fashion. It is well branched and with the foliage, gives it a nice full look overall. The leaves are smaller in size, up to 3 inches long, and are oval in shape with serrated edges. The leaves first open to a golden yellow color, maturing to a light green-gold color through the summer. In the fall, the leaves turn wonderful shades of yellow, orange and red. In the late spring, flower clusters appear, producing very small pink flowers, nearly covering the shrub. The flowers can rebloom sporadically over the rest of the summer.
Additional Information
Spiraea japonica ‘Goldmound’ grows to a height of 2 to 3 feet, with a spread of 3 to 4 feet. It is recommended for climate zones 4 to 8. It grows best in full sunlight. Goldmound Spirea grows best in well drained soils with moderate amounts of moisture. Spent flowers should be removed to encourage possible new blooming. Pruning should occur in the late winter or early spring. It does not seem to have any disease or insect issues.
