General Information

Fire Chief Arborvitae features distinct, finely textured foliage that is green with reddish tips. This hardy, slow growing evergreen displays good rounded growth habit. It coloring and shape provide good year round attraction. This delightful shrub will stand out in your garden or landscape. It is a sport of sport Rheingold. It tends to grow to the ground eliminating the need for filler plants.  Plant as an accent or specimen.  Use in mass plantings for borders, hedges or screens.  Outstanding choice for an Asian garden.

Additional Information

Thuja occidentalis ‘Congabe’ should be grown in Full Sun for the best coloring.  However, it will tolerate light shade.  It will grow 3 to 4 feet tall with a similar spread.  Plant in zones 3 to 7. Deer resistant. Good resistance to sun and winter burning. Tolerates some air pollution.  Numerous wildlife are attracted to the Fire Chief for both food and shelter. Keep in mind that shipping size and height are an average of our plants and can vary by season.

Care & Shipping Notes

Easy to grow in moist, well drained soil.  Tolerates a variety of soil types as long as it is not dry. Prefers moist, loamy soil. No serious insect or disease problems. Great low maintenance shrub.  Can be pruned, but take care to only trim back the current years growth.  Mulch around the base of the plant to help hold in moisture and prevent weeds. NOT AVAILABLE FOR SALE IN THESE US STATES AND TERRITORIES: AK, HI, GM, PR, VI. Also, WE NO LONGER SHIP TO CALIFORNIA due to Department of Ag restrictions on live plants.
