General Information
Black Consort Currant is a great plant that could have a variety of uses in your landscape. This is a moderate sized shrub, growing to 5 feet in height. It is an upright, multi-stemmed shrub, that has both ornamental and edible features. The leaves are smaller in size, with lobed, serrated edges. This foliage has a nice green color throughout the growing season transitioning to beautiful red shades in the fall. In the mid to late spring, clusters of fragrant white flowers form, adding a great deal of beauty to the shrub. Following the flowers, clusters of berries form, ripening in the late summer. These berries are great for fresh eating, and have a wide variety of culinary uses.
Additional Information
Ribes nigra 'Consort' grow to a height of 4 to 5 feet, with a similar spread. It is recommended for climate zones 4 to 8. It can grow in full to partial sun. Consort grows best in loamy, well drained soils, with moderate to average amounts of moisture. It is said to have good resistance to white pine blister rust.
