Columnar Buckthorn
General Information
Columnar Buckthorn is a deciduous shrub. It can grow quite tall, upwards of 12 feet tall. It grows in a very upright, narrow and densely growing fashion. This shrub is ideal for as a hedge, or in a variety of other landscaping areas. The leaves are oval in shape, with a nice glossy appearance. They are very attractive throughout the growing season, dark green in color. An added attraction are small berries, maturing to black in color in the summertime. The berries, while inedible to people, are attractive to birds.
Additional Information
Rhamnus frangula ‘Columnaris’ grows to a height of 10 to 12 feet, with a spread of 3 to 4 feet. It is recommended for USDA climate zones 3 to 7. The Columnar Buckthorn can grow in full to part sunlight. It does well with average amounts of moisture in well drained soils.
