General Information

Ground Hog Chokeberry is a low growing deciduous shrub.  This plant is perfect for difficult areas, as a beautiful, low maintenance plant.  The plant keeps a nice appearance throughout the spring and summer months with glossy, deep green foliage.  In the fall, the shrub has great red leaves.  In the springtime, Ground Hog has clusters of tiny white flowers. Following these flowers, berries form.  They ripen in the fall, to purple-black in color.  The berries are edible, though quite astringent when eaten fresh.

Additional Information

Aronia melanocarpa 'UCONNAM012' grows to a height of 8 to 14 inches, with a spread of 30 to 36 inches.  It is recommended for USDA climate zones 3 to 9.  Ground Hog Chokeberry can grow well in full to part sunlight.  It does well with average amounts of moisture in well drained soils.  It is said to be drought tolerant, once established.

We treat your plant

like it's ours

  • Before your plant leaves our greenhouse, it’s wrapped and supported to handle the journey ahead. Pots are sealed to prevent spills, plants are gently netted and staked for stability, and boxes are packed with biodegradable peanuts to absorb movement along the way. Thoughtful packaging helps your plant arrive happy, healthy, and ready to grow.

When your plant
arrives

  • Plants may show signs of stress after shipping, such as bent stems or drooping leaves. This is normal. Prompt unpacking, proper watering, and a short recovery period in the shade help plants rebound quickly. Avoid heavy pruning and give your plant time to adjust as it establishes in your landscape.
