Blackhawks Big Bluestem is an ornamental grass. This grass can reach up to 5 feet tall. It tends to have an upright form, with a good deal of ornamental appeal. Blackhawks is a great choice for a variety of landscaping areas. The foliage emerges in the spring deep green, before taking purple tones. The leaves will continue to mature from purple to near black by the fall. In the mid to late summer, tan seed heads develop, producing a nice color contrast with the foliage.

Andropogon gerardii 'Blackhawks' grows to a height of 4 to 5 feet, with a spread of 18 to 24 inches. It is recommended for USDA climate zones 3 to 9. Blackhawks Big Bluestem tends to do best when planted in full sunlight. It does well with average amounts of moisture in well drained soils.
