General Information

Prairie Blues Little Bluestem Grass is a great plant that could be used in many different places in your landscape.  It typically grows to 3.5 feet in height.  Little Bluestem is a native grass that once grew in the tallgrass prairies of the Great Plains states.  Prairie Blues is a cultivar of this plant that is well known for its ornamental value.  It grows in an upright fashion, narrow at the base before flaring outwards at the top.  The grass grows in a clump, with long, flat and narrow(.25 inch) leaves. The leaves have a consistent grey-blue-green coloration throughout the growing season, before turning beautiful shades of pink to orange in the fall.  In the fall fluffy silver seed heads provide a great deal of interest and persists into the winter.

Additional Information

Schizachyrium scoparium 'Prairie Blues' grows to a height of 3 to 3.5 feet, with a spread of 18 to 24 inches.  It is recommended for climate zones 3 to 9.  It grows best in full sunlight.  Prairie Blues does best in average, well drained soils with average amounts of moisture.  It has a good tolerance for most all soil conditions and once established, has good drought tolerance.  It should be trimmed to the ground in the late winter or early spring, before any new growth has appeared.  It is not known to have any disease or insect issues.

We treat your plant

like it's ours

  • Before your plant leaves our greenhouse, it’s wrapped and supported to handle the journey ahead. Pots are sealed to prevent spills, plants are gently netted and staked for stability, and boxes are packed with biodegradable peanuts to absorb movement along the way. Thoughtful packaging helps your plant arrive happy, healthy, and ready to grow.

When your plant
arrives

  • Plants may show signs of stress after shipping, such as bent stems or drooping leaves. This is normal. Prompt unpacking, proper watering, and a short recovery period in the shade help plants rebound quickly. Avoid heavy pruning and give your plant time to adjust as it establishes in your landscape.
