General Information

Big Bluestem Red October is a great ornamental grass that can work well in many different areas of your landscape.  It can grow to a large height, up to 6 feet tall.  The parent of this grass, Big Bluestem, is a native grass that was once widespread throughout much of the midwest.  This particular grass was propagated by a nursery in Illinois.  The height and coloring of this grass make a perfect contrast for other plants or could easily standout on its own.  The grass emerges in the spring in deep green color with red along the margins, staying green through the summer.  In the late summer, the grass turns purplish-red, before turning a brilliant red color after the first frost.  In later summer, red flowers bloom, turning to three pronged seed pods that add a great deal to the ornamental value of this grass in the autumn season.

Additional Information

Andropogon gerardii 'Red October' grows to a height of 4 to 6 feet, with a spread of 2 to 3 feet.  It is recommended for climate zones 4 to 9.  It grows best in full sunlight.  Red October grows best in medium quality, well drained soils with just average amounts of moisture.  It adapts to a wide variety of conditions.  Once the grass has established its root system, it has great drought tolerance.  It can be trimmed to near the ground in the winter before new growth appears.  Red October is not known to have any disease or insect issues. Keep in mind that shipping size and height are an average of our plants and can vary by season.

We treat your plant

like it's ours

  • Before your plant leaves our greenhouse, it’s wrapped and supported to handle the journey ahead. Pots are sealed to prevent spills, plants are gently netted and staked for stability, and boxes are packed with biodegradable peanuts to absorb movement along the way. Thoughtful packaging helps your plant arrive happy, healthy, and ready to grow.

When your plant
arrives

  • Plants may show signs of stress after shipping, such as bent stems or drooping leaves. This is normal. Prompt unpacking, proper watering, and a short recovery period in the shade help plants rebound quickly. Avoid heavy pruning and give your plant time to adjust as it establishes in your landscape.
