General Information

The Eastern Red Cedar is a great tree that could fit well in many different areas in your landscape.  This tree is native to all states east of the Rocky Mountains.  The tree can grow to be very large, up to 80 feet tall.  In most instances, the tree grows with branches nearly to the ground, making it perfect for a privacy screen or windbreak.  The Eastern Red can have a variety of shapes, but generally grows in a broadly rounded shape with a pyramidal crown.  It has mostly horizontal branching, with thick foliage growth, providing nesting and cover opportunities for a large variety of birds.  The foliage is very narrow, growing scale or awl in shape. This tree has dark green-blue foliage that can turn greenish-brown in the coldest months.  It has exfoliating bark, revealing red-brown bark, becoming more ridged as it ages.  The Eastern Red Cedar grows as separate male and female varieties, producing very small waxy, light blue berry shaped seed cones.  These berry cones are eaten by a wide variety of birds and animals.

Additional Information

Juniperus virginiana grows to a height of 30 to 50 feet, with a spread of 8 to 20 feet.  It is recommended for climate zones 2 to 9.  It grows best in full sunlight.  The Eastern Red Cedar can grow in a wide variety of soil types and moisture conditions.  This tree is not known to have any serious disease or insect issues.

We treat your plant

like it's ours

  • Before your plant leaves our greenhouse, it’s wrapped and supported to handle the journey ahead. Pots are sealed to prevent spills, plants are gently netted and staked for stability, and boxes are packed with biodegradable peanuts to absorb movement along the way. Thoughtful packaging helps your plant arrive happy, healthy, and ready to grow.

When your plant
arrives

  • Plants may show signs of stress after shipping, such as bent stems or drooping leaves. This is normal. Prompt unpacking, proper watering, and a short recovery period in the shade help plants rebound quickly. Avoid heavy pruning and give your plant time to adjust as it establishes in your landscape.
