General Information

Smooth Sumac is a deciduous shrub. It can grow to be a larger plant, at upwards of 10 feet tall. This is a plant that is native to a large portion of the US. It is a large, open plant that is great for naturalized areas, for erosion control and other locations. The leaves are fern-like in nature, with small leaflets. They are a very attractive glossy, dark green in the spring and summer months. The leaves turn bright orange to red in the fall. Greenish-yellow flower clusters appear in late spring. Berry clusters follow, turning red in the fall, maturing to maroon-brown late fall to winter. These berry clusters will only form on female plants.

Additional Information

Rhus glabra will generally reach 8 to 10 feet tall, with a similar spread. It is recommended for USDA climate zones 3 to 9. Smooth Sumac can grow in full to partial sunlight conditions. It will do well with average amounts of moisture in well drained soils.

We treat your plant

like it's ours

  • Before your plant leaves our greenhouse, it’s wrapped and supported to handle the journey ahead. Pots are sealed to prevent spills, plants are gently netted and staked for stability, and boxes are packed with biodegradable peanuts to absorb movement along the way. Thoughtful packaging helps your plant arrive happy, healthy, and ready to grow.

When your plant
arrives

  • Plants may show signs of stress after shipping, such as bent stems or drooping leaves. This is normal. Prompt unpacking, proper watering, and a short recovery period in the shade help plants rebound quickly. Avoid heavy pruning and give your plant time to adjust as it establishes in your landscape.
