General Information
Smooth Sumac is a deciduous shrub. It can grow to be a larger plant, at upwards of 10 feet tall. This is a plant that is native to a large portion of the US. It is a large, open plant that is great for naturalized areas, for erosion control and other locations. The leaves are fern-like in nature, with small leaflets. They are a very attractive glossy, dark green in the spring and summer months. The leaves turn bright orange to red in the fall. Greenish-yellow flower clusters appear in late spring. Berry clusters follow, turning red in the fall, maturing to maroon-brown late fall to winter. These berry clusters will only form on female plants.

Rhus glabra will generally reach 8 to 10 feet tall, with a similar spread. It is recommended for USDA climate zones 3 to 9. Smooth Sumac can grow in full to partial sunlight conditions. It will do well with average amounts of moisture in well drained soils.
