Description

Zuni Crape Myrtle

General Information

Zuni Crape Myrtle is a great plant that could fit well into many different areas of your landscape.  This cultivar was originally developed by the National Arboretum in Washington DC.  This shrub grows in an upright, spreading, multi-stemmed fashion. It is generally more compact than the average crepe myrtle, 5 feet in colder areas up to 12 feet tall in warmer areas.  The foliage is smaller in size, with an oval to elliptical shape.  The leaves are green in the spring and summer before turning shades of reddish-orange to deep red in the autumn.  The flowers really set this crepe myrtle apart.  The flowers form in large 3 to 5 inches long clusters.  The individual flowers are small with a ruffled appearance.  The lavender colored flowers bloom from summer to early autumn.  As the tree matures, its gray-brown bark begins to exfoliate.

Additional Information

Lagerstroemia indica ‘Zuni’ grows to a height of 4 to 12 feet, with a similar spread.  The plants grow much taller in the warmer southern states, taking more winter injury in the northern states leading to smaller size.  It is recommended for climate zones 6 to 9.  It likes to grow in full sunlight.  Zuni grows best in average well drained soils with average to moderate levels of moisture. This plant is said to how good resistance to powdery mildew.
