York Elderberry

General Information

York Elderberry is moderate sized fruiting shrub.  It is great in borders, or in fruiting shrub areas.  This shrub grows in an overall upright fashion, and tends to be more compact than the native elderberries.  Nice deep green foliage in the growing season, can occasionally develop nice fall color.  Large clusters of fragrant white flowers in the late springtime.   Produces abundant dark purple berries in the late summer.  Has a wide variety of culinary uses, in jams, juice and wine.  They are also attractive to birds and other wildlife.

Additional Information

Sambucus canadensis ‘York’ grows to a height of 6 to 10 feet, with a spread of 6 to 8 feet.  It is recommended for USDA climate zones 4 to 8.  York tends to do best in full sunlight.  It does well with average amounts of moisture in well drained soils.
