Description

Tonto Crape Myrtle

General Information

Tonto Crape Myrtle is a beautiful shrub that will fit well in different areas of your landscape.  This is a smaller size cultivar developed by the National Arboretum in Washington DC.  The Tonto would fit well in a border area or any spot that needs a great pop of late season color.  It typically grows as an upright multi-stemmed shrub.  The foliage gives this shrub a great look before the flowers appear.  The leaves are small and oval in shape.  They have a lightly glossy appearance with a green color in the spring and summer, before turning a great maroon to red color in the fall.  The flowers form large 6 to 7 inch long clusters all over this shrub.  The flowers are very small individually with a ruffled crepe paper appearance.  The blooms have a magenta-red color.  The light colored bark exfoliates after a few years, adding another point of interest.

Additional Information

Lagerstroemia x ‘Tonto’ grows to a height of 4 to 8 feet, with a similar spread.  In warmer southern climates, it can grow to 6 to 12 feet tall and wide.  It is recommended for climate zones 5 to 10.  Tonto grows best in full sunlight.  It likes to grow in average, well drained soils with moderate amounts of moisture.  The shrub does best when mulched to provide some protection to the roots.  The Tonto has good resistance to powdery mildew.
