Red Valerian is a nice perennial plant. It is great for borders, flower beds and a variety of other landscaping areas. It forms as a well-branched, bushy plant with nice flowers atop the stems. This plant keeps a more compact overall form than other plants of species. The leaves are oval in shape and are a very attractive blue-green in color. The individual flowers are small, growing in large clusters. They have a very attractive scarlet-red color, to go along with a nice fragrance. These flowers begin to bloom late spring, and if spent flower clusters are removed, they can flower again in the late summer. Great for attracting butterflies!
Centranthus ruber ‘Coccineus’ grows to a height of 2 to 3 feet, with a similar spread. It is recommended for USDA climate zones 5 to 8. It can grow in full to partial sunlight. Red Valerian does well with average moisture conditions, in well drained soils. It is not known to have any serious disease or insect issues.
