Description

Red Lake Currant

General Information

Red Lake Currant is a great shrub with many ornamental qualities that would fit in the landscape or in an orchard setting.  It is smaller in size, growing to a height of 5 feet.  It has a generally upright, rounded form that grows in full with foliage, giving it good full look.  The leaves are smaller in size, with three lobes and broadly serrated edges.  They keep a nice green color throughout the growing season.  In the mid-spring, clusters of yellow-green flowers form, followed by the currant fruits.  The red fruits ripen in drooping clusters in July.  They can be eaten fresh, but are usually used for jams and a range of other culinary uses.

Additional Information

Ribes rubrum ‘Red Lake’ grows to a height of 3 to 5 feet, with a generally similar spread.  It is recommended for climate zones 3 to 7.  It can grow in full to partial sunlight.  Red Lake grows best in rich well drained soils, with moderate to average amounts of moisture.  This plant does not have any serious disease or insect issues.  In more humid climates, it can be effected by powdery mildew and leaf spot.  Although it will be bear fruit early, it may take 4 to 5 years to fully mature and bear full fruit crops.  Sale of this plant is restricted in some states.
