General Information
In spring, fragrant pink flowers adorn the Purpleleaf Sandcherry. This hardy shrub grows in an upright, oval form. Its foliage is rich, purple red. It is grown from cuttings, eliminating troublesome suckers. Small, purple black fruits follow the flowers and ripen mid summer. The birds love these tasty treats! The colorful foliage makes a beautiful, showy specimen or accent shrub. Great for borders, foundation plantings, screens and hedges.
Additional Information
Prunus cistena grows best in Full Sun. It will grow 6-8′ tall with a similar spread. Plant in zones 3 to 8. Attracts butterflies.

Purpleleaf Sandcherry prefers rich, moist soil. It may be affected by a variety of diseases and pest. Japanese beetles can do significant damage to the foliage. Borers and tree canker may also be problems. Caterpillars, leaf hoppers, aphids, spider mites and scale may also be present. Powdery mildew, root rot, die back, leaf curl, fireblight, honey fungus and leaf spot may cause damage. It is not uncommon for Purple leaf Sandcherry to have a lifespan of less than 10 years, due to the variety of pest and disease damage.
