Description
Purple Passion Asparagus
General Information
Purple Passion Asparagus is a delightful perennial plant that will produce a great crop for many years. The spears have a very interesting smoky purple color. This, and other, varieties of purple asparagus are said to be 20 percent sweeter than green varieties of asparagus. They have a slightly nutty, sweet flavor when cooked. They can be eaten fresh out of the garden and add a delightful color to vegetable trays or salads. However, when cooked they do turn a deep green color. The spears are best when cut at about 5 inches of height. After establishment, a heavy crop of Purple Passion will be produced in April and May.
Additional Information
Asparagus ‘Purple Passion’ grows best to about 5 inches for the spears, and will grow ferns in the post-harvest season up to 4 feet tall. It is recommended for USDA climate zones 3 to 10. It can grow in full sunlight. It tends to grow best in well drained soils with average amounts of moisture. It will potentially take up to 3 years for the asparagus to properly establish itself and be able to have a harvest. Purple Passion is said to have a good deal of resistance to a variety of diseases common to asparagus.
