Description

Prairie Pioneer Dwarf Chinkapin Oak

General Information

Prairie Pioneer Dwarf Chinkapin Oak is a great tree that would fit well in different areas of your landscape.  This tree was developed at North Dakota State and has been shown capable of surviving temperatures of 35 to 40 degrees below zero, making this an excellent choice for northern climates. This is a smaller size oak tree, only reaching 28 feet in height.  Many of the oaks in this family come in a multi-stem shrub form.  This tree generally has a nice central stem, with slightly ascending branching.  It gives the tree an oval shape, with a nice, full overall look.  The leaves are 2 to 4 inches long and generally oblong in shape, with serrated edges.  The leaves are glossy and have a nice dark green color, with a lighter underside of the leaf.  The fall color is a mostly undistinguished yellow-brown.  Each spring, the tree is covered in small yellow drooping flower spikes.

Additional Information

Quercus prinoides ‘Fort Lincoln’  grows to a height of 24 to 28 feet, with a spread of 16 to 24 feet.  It is recommended for climate zones 3 to 8.  It grows best in full sunlight.  Prairie Pioneer grows best in rich, well drained soils with at least average amounts of water.
