Description

Ostrich Fern

General Information

Ostrich Fern is a deciduous perennial plant. It can grow to be larger in size, reaching upwards of 6 feet tall. The plants have an upright to arching overall form. It can be a plant that will spread a bit over time, but will provide nice ornamental appeal to shaded landscaping areas. The fronds that emerge in the spring will grow the tallest, 4 to 6 feet. The deeply cut, feathery leaves are bright green in color. Smaller fronds begin to emerge as the taller fronds fade. They are similar in texture and deeper green in color. These leaves can take on bronzish-gold color in the fall.

Additional Information

Matteuccia struthiopteris reaches 3 to 6 feet tall, with a spread of 3 to 4 feet. It is recommended for USDA climate zones 3 to 7. Ostrich Fern will do well in full to partial shade. It will do well with average to moderate amounts of moisture in well drained soils.
