Chinkapin Oak
General Information
‘The Chinkapin Oak features ash gray bark that breaks into narrow, thin flakes adding interest. The dark green summer leaves turn yellow orange to brownish purple in fall. The underside of the leaves is pale green to white. Inconspicuous yellow catkins bloom in spring. Small, sweet acorns ripen in fall, attracting a variety of wildlife. This slow to medium growing tree has a rounded habit when young. As it matures, the crown spreads with irregular branching. It is sometimes called Chestnut Oak because the leaves are similar to chestnuts. Chinkapin is a great specimen tree for large areas of the landscape.
Additional Information
Quercus muehlenbergii grows best in Full Sun. It will grow 30-40’ tall with a spread of 45-50’. Heat and drought tolerant.

Plant in average, well drained soil. Will tolerate a variety of soil types. No serious insect or disease problems.
