Northern Sea Oats
General Information
Northern Sea Oats is a perennial ornamental grass. It can be moderate in size, reaching 4 feet in height. This grass forms as a clump of foliage, with seed stems extending above. It is great for a variety of landscaping uses. The leaves are broad and arching, growing in clump 10 inches or so tall. They are bright green in the growing season, coppery-brown in the fall. Tall, slightly drooping stems growing above the leaves. The seed heads are reminiscent of oats. They emerge green, turning off white in color. In the fall, they take on purplish tones before changing to brown.
Additional Information
Chasmanthium latifolium has a foliage height of 10 to 12 inches, with seed stems 3 to 4 feet tall. It is recommended for USDA climate zones 3 to 8. Northern Sea Oats can grow well in full to part sunlight. It does well with average amounts of moisture in well drained soils. It is not known to have any serious disease or insect issues.
