McIntosh Apple: M7 Rootstock

General Information

The McIntosh Apple tree is a wonderful tree that is a great for different purposes in your landscape.  Being an apple tree, it is largely known for the fruit it produces, but this tree can be quite aesthetically pleasing as well.  This particular tree will only grow 12 to 15 feet tall and wide, allowing it to be placed even in a small to medium sized yard.  This is an old fashioned apple tree, originally brought to market in the early 1800’s.  In the spring, beautiful white flowers cover the tree providing a great decoration for the yard.  The oval, medium sized green leaves form a nice canopy that provides cover for birds and other small animals.  The apples are moderate in size.  The fruit is red with white flesh, occasionally blushed with pink.  The fruit has a semi-tart taste that is wonderful for fresh eating, applesauce and a wide variety of dessert uses.

Additional Information

Malus ‘McIntosh’ grows to a height of 12 to 15 feet, with a similar spread.  It is recommended for climate zones 4 to 7.  It likes to grow in full sunlight.  McIntosh prefers to grow in well drained, organically rich soils with at least moderate amounts of moisture.  This tree produces best with a pollinator such as Gala, Liberty or Red Delicious.  The apples ripen late September into early October.  This tree has good resistance of cedar apple rust and fireblight.
