Large Flowered Penstemon- Native

General Information

Large Flowered Penstemon is beautiful addition to any native flower bed or larger naturalized area.  This plant has a semi-woody base.  Stems extend upward, with the lower part covered in deep green, narrow lance shaped leaves.  The flowers form in loose clusters above the leaves.  They are tubular in shape and around 2 inches in length.  The flowers are violet in color, with white blotches and deeper purple lines emenating from the center.  The flowers bloom in the springtime.  These flowers attract a large number of different pollinators. 

Additional Information

Penstemon cobaea grows to a height of 1 to 2 Feet, with a spread of 12 to 18 Inches.  It is recommended for climate zones 5 to 8.  It tends to grow best in full sunlight.  Large Flowered Penstemon grows well in well drained soil, in average to dry moisture conditions.  The plant is not known to have any disease or insect issues.  It does have trouble in wet or poorly drained growing conditions.
