Description

Grand Traverse Hazelnut

General Information

Grand Traverse Hazelnut is a great nut producing tree.  It has been shown to have a number of good qualities.  One of the biggest factors in favor of Grand Traverse is its resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight.  This fungal disease has caused great damage in many areas of the US.  Another great feature is the excellent nut production on the tree.  It has been shown to produce upwards of 11 pounds of nuts per tree.  Grand Traverse has very uniform nuts, with an average weight of 1.3 grams per nut.  Generally matures late summer to early autumn.  Needs another pollinating partner to produce.  The best choice is The Beast Hazelnut, which should be released to market soon.  It can also be pollinated by a seed grown American Hazelnut variety.  This tree will be 3 to 4 feet tall when shipped.

Additional Information

Corylus avellana ‘Grand Traverse’ grows to a height of 15 to 20 feet, with a similar spread.  It is recommended for USDA climate zones 5 to 9.  It tends to do best in full sunlight.  Grand Traverse does well with average amounts of moisture in well drained soils.
