Garretson Persimmon

General Information

Garretson Persimmon is a great deciduous fruiting tree.  The persimmon is a native tree, with a range covering the eastern half of the United States.  The tree has an overall rounded shape.  Long, to 6 inches, oval shaped leaves.  Dark green and glossy during the growing season, yellowish tinted orange in the fall.  Cream to yellow flowers bloom in the late spring.  Following the flowers, fruits form.  The fruits mature to orange, tinted red, in the fall.   The fruit on the Garretson Persimmon tend to be a good bit larger than the standard persimmon.  Fruits can be eaten fresh or for a variety of cooking uses.  Deep furrowed bark adds good winter interest.

Additional Information

Diospyros virginiana ‘Garretson’ grows to a height of 35 to 60 feet, with a spread of 20 to 35 feet.  It is recommended for USDA planting zones 4 to 9.  It tends to do best in full sunlight.  It does well with average amounts of moisture in well drained soils.
