Description

Flame Grass

General Information

Flame Grass is a great plant that could be used in many different areas in your landscape.  This grass is moderate in height, growing up to 5 feet tall.  It is an upright growing grass, growing in tight clumps.  This grass expands by rhizomes, with these roots increasing the overall width of the plant.  The grass leaves are flat and narrow, one half inch wide.  The grass emerges green in color with a red tint, with the red tint increasing as the growing season continues.  The foliage turns beautiful shades of orange and red in the fall season, before turning shades of burgundy in the winter time.  In the later summer, red flowers form in feathery clusters, maturing into white seed plumes in the fall. The burgundy foliage and white seeds persist well into the winter, giving this plant winter interest that few other plants can match.

Additional Information

Miscanthus ‘Purpurascens’ grows to a height of 4 to 5 feet, with a spread of 2.5 to 3 feet.  It is recommended for climate zones 5 to 9.  It grows best in full sunlight.  Flame grass grows well in well drained soil, with average amounts of water.  It is tolerant of a range of soil conditions.  Foliage should be cut to the ground in late winter or early spring, before any new growth appears.  There are not any widespread disease or insect issues.  In some areas, miscanthus blight and miscanthus mealworm cause some issues.
