Dove Tree, Handkerchief Tree
General Information
The Dove Tree features large, white blooms that emerge in late spring or early summer. The leaves are heart shaped and coarsely textured. The “petals” are bracts that cover the inconspicuous flowers. The fluttering, white blooms resemble handkerchiefs hanging from the branches. It is also called Ghost Tree. Foliage is somewhat aromatic. Can be grown from seed. The Dove Tree is difficult to propagate however it is fast growing once it is established. Excellent specimen tree with its unique, showy, spring flowers. The Dove Tree produces fruits that around approximately 3 cm. long, hard nuts. This native of China was introduced to the western world by French missionary Abbe Armand David. He collected a specimen of the tree as part of a science class taught to children at a Beijing mission. It was introduced to trade by English nurseryman Sir Harry Veitch.
Additional Information
Davidia involucrata will grow best in Full Sun to Light Shade. It will grow 30-40 feet tall with a spread of 15-30 feet. Plant in zones 6 to 8.
