Black Lace Elderberry
General Information
Black Lace Elderberry has lacy, deep purple foliage that appears almost black. Clusters of pink flowers bloom in the summer and provide a great contrast to the dark foliage. The flowers have a lemony scent. This plant is a cultivar of the European Elderberry. Large colonies can form from suckers that grow from the roots. Prune suckers to prevent the bush from spreading. Black-red berries can be harvested in fall, and make wonderful jam and wine. Attracts butterflies and birds. Black Lace Elderberry is a great choice for its attractive foliage, and showy, edible berries. Great as an accent shrub, screen, or border.

Sambucus nigra ‘Eva’ will grow best in Full Sun to Light Shade. It will reach a height of 8-10′ with a similar spread . Plant in zones 4 to 7. Deer tolerant. Attracts birds and butterflies.

Easy to grow in medium to wet, well drained soil. It will grow in a wide range of soils, but prefers the soil to be moist and humusy. Regular spring pruning will promote growth and keep your plant looking its best. Susceptible to powdery mildew, leaf spot, borers, spider mites, and aphids.
