Description

Big Daddy Hosta

General Information

Big Daddy Hosta is a great option for the shady areas in your landscape.  This is a large hosta, growing to two feet tall and 3 feet wide.  This hosta does retain its best color when in a shady spot with perhaps some light morning sun.  This makes the Big Daddy a perfect plant for all the areas where many other plants would not work well.  This plant is primarily grown for the foliage, but has flowers that add to the beauty of the plant.  In the mid-summer,  clusters of funnel shaped, light lavender colored flowers grow on stems above the foliage.  The leaves are large in size, up to 12 inches long and wide, with a nearly rounded shape, coming to a point at the end.  The leaves are thick and ridged, becoming cupped as they mature.  The leaves emerge with a great blue color as they emerge in the spring, changing to a green-blue color as the season continues.

Additional Information

Hosta ‘Big Daddy’ grow to a height of 24 to 28 inches tall, with a spread of 24 to 36 inches.  It is recommended for climate zones 3 to 8.  It grows best in full shade, with tolerance for dappled morning sun.  Big Daddy grows best in well drained soils with moderate amounts of moisture.  This hosta is largely disease and insect resistant, although they can be damaged by slugs and snails feeding on the leaves.
