General Information
Big Bluestem grows in columnar, upright clumps of blue-green leaves during the summer. Rich orange and copper red fall color. Big Bluestem is a warm season, bunchgrass. The seed head is branched into three parts resembling a turkey’s foot. In late summer these red seed heads appear and darken as they mature. Foliage provides good fall and winter interest. This ornamental grass is great for naturalized areas. Big Bluestem grows naturally in prairies and meadows. Plant in mass at the rear of a border, or as a screen or accent. Beautiful addition to a wildflower garden or meadow planting. Use to help control erosion.
