U-Pick Fruits
Fruit can never be fresher than when you pick it yourself! At Grimm's Gardens, we offer summer blueberries
for you to pick fresh from the bush. Blueberries generally ripen beginning the last week in June and last
until mid- to late-July, depending on the weather. Our blueberries are grown without any insecticides.
There is a "blueberry
hotline" for you to call to check on the availability of berries - we close the patch every couple of days to
ensure that there are plenty of ripe berries for all of our pickers. To check whether the patch is open for
picking, call us toll-free at 888-459-2586. The message on this machine changes from season to season and
also includes greenhouse hours and more.
In the fall, pick-your-own apples are available.
We currently offer Liberty, Jonafree, and Pristine apples. They ripen from early summer until late fall,
with the time depending on the variety. While the use of some insecticides has become necessary to
keep the worms out of our apples, we are supplementing the sprays with natural pest-fighters. We have put
up several bat houses. Bats feed on a variety of insects, including coddling moths.
Both the bats and the moths fly at night, unlike butterflies, which fly during the day.
We are continuing to expand our orchard to offer you the freshest fruit possible. We have planted peach,
apricot, sweet cherry, and plum trees and will be offering these fruits as the trees mature.
The earliest of these fruits may be available for picking by 2007.
Are you interested in raising your own fruit?
We stock apple, peach, cherry, and pear trees in our nursery. If you are looking for a different type
of fruit or a specific variety that we do not have in stock,
we can order trees for you to plant to begin your own orchard
at home. Enjoy the beauty of the flowering trees in the spring and the satisfaction of harvesting your own
fruit in the summer or fall. Dwarf grafted trees generally produce fruit 2 to 3 years after they are planted.
