Description

Sweetshrub

General Information

The Sweetshrub is a great plant that could fit well in many different areas of your landscape.  This plant is native to the southeastern US, and is also called the Carolina allspice.  It is  moderately large for a shrub.  It can be used in a larger landscaping area.  It would be ideal for a naturalized area with its propensity to sucker.  It can create larger size colonies, if the suckers are not removed.  Sweetshrub grows in an overall rounded, spreading fashion.  After the shrub has flowered, it can be trimmed to maintain a proper shape in a landscaped area.  The flowers develop late spring into the summer.  They are 2 inches wide and unfold with narrow petals.  They have a dark red color and are quite fragrant.  After these flowers, a seed pod develops that matures by the fall, sometimes persisting into winter.  The leaves are moderately large, up to 6 inches long, with an oval shape.  The leaves are dark green in color with a lighter colored underside and a glossy appearance.  In the fall, the leaves have a great golden yellow color.  These leaves are also aromatic, giving off a sweet and spicy scent when brushed or crushed.

Additional Information

Calycanthus floridus grows to a height of 6 to 10 feet, with a spread of 6 to 12 feet.  It is recommended for climate zones 4 to 9.  It can grow in full to partial sun.  Sweetshrub grows best in rich loamy soils with moderate amounts of moisture.  It is tolerant of a wide range of conditions.  It is not known to have any disease or insect issues.
