Description

Sunburst Hypericum

General Information

Sunburst Hypericum is a great plant that will fit well in your landscape.  It is a smaller size plant, growing only 3 feet tall and wide.  This gives this plant the ability to be used in small landscaped areas, borders, or even in a larger container.  This is a compact, low growing, mounded shrub, that has many great attributes.  The leaves are oblong to lanceolate in shape and are about 3 inches in length.  The leaves have a nice blue-green color.  In warmer climates, the foliage is evergreen.  The bright yellow flowers are about 2 inches in width.  They have 5 small petals, with a dense mound of small stamens in the center.  These flowers bloom in June and July, giving way to small reddish-brown fruits that mature in September.  The mature branches have exfoliating bark that will add great winter interest. The flowers attract bees.

Additional Information

Hypericum frondosum ‘Sunburst’ grows to a height of 2 to 3 feet, with a similar spread.  It is recommended for climate zones 5 to 8.  It can grow in full to partial sunlight.  Sunburst will grow best in rich, loamy soil with moderate moisture levels.  It is tolerant to some degree of drought conditions.  In the colder areas, some winter dieback may occur, but new growth will spring up in the growing season.  Wilt and root rot may occur in hot and humid southern climates.  Leaf spot of mildew issues also may occur, but are fairly minor in nature.

The shipment arrived in perfect shape. After the first year, this plant came back beautifully. It’s filling out very nicely with many blooms. It probably measures 2 1/2 by 2 1/2 feet now.
