General Information

Sun Harvest American Hazelnut is a great shrub that will fit well into different areas of your landscape.  This is a moderate sized shrub up to 15 feet tall and 15 or more feet wide.  This shrub can have many uses, from ornamental, nut producing or naturalizing.  It grows in a multi-stemmed fashion, gaining a rounded shape.  This plant sends up root suckers, which over time can create a large, dense thicket.  If these suckers are removed, this plant could be used a smaller landscaped area.  In the spring, yellow male flowers appear along with smaller female flowers, following this, half inch long nuts appear before ripening in July to August.  The leaves on the shrub are oval in shape, with serrated edges and about 5 inches long.  The leaves have a dark green color in the growing season with great fall color in shades of orange, red and yellow.

Additional Information

Corylus americana ‘Sun Harvest’ grows to a height of 10 to 15 feet, with spread of 10 to 18 feet.  It is recommended for climate zones 4 to 8.  It can grow in full to partial sun.  Sun Harvest grows best in average, well drained soil with moderate amounts of moisture.  The hazelnuts are prized by birds and wildlife, making it great for natural areas or anywhere that you would want to view wildlife.  This hazelnut tree does not have any serious disease or insect issues.
