Description

Sugar Shack Buttonbush

General Information

Sugar Shack Buttonbush is a great plant that would fit well in many different areas in your landscape.  The Buttonbush is a well known native plant, this cultivar grows in a more compact size.  The native grows anywhere from wetlands to dry bluffs and the sugar shack can handle many of those same conditions.  The foliage grows nice and thickly on this shrub, giving a good full look to the plant.  The are moderate in size and have an oval shape.  They are a glossy medium green in color in the spring and summer months before turning a wonderful shade of burgandy in the fall.  The unique flowers develop in the summer months.  They have circular clusters of tiny white flowers with stamens above the flowers.  Fruits develop in the summer, ripening to a great red color by the late summer.  The flowers are a great food source for bees and butterflies and the red fruits are of interest to the birds.

Additional Information

Cephalanthus occidentalis ‘SMCOSS’ grows to a height of 3 to 4 feet, with a similar spread.  It is recommended for climate zones 4 to 10.  It grows in full to partial sunlight.  Sugar Shack grows best in well drained soils with moderate amounts of moisture, but is quite tolerant of many different conditions.  Overall, this is an easy to grow plant with great interest in all seasons.
