Description

Silver Blue Hydrangea

General Information

The Silver Blue Hydrangea is a great plant that will fit well in many different areas of your landscape.  This is a moderate sized hydrangea, 5 feet tall and wide, making it large enough to be a standout shrub, but small enough to fit well in many different areas.  It grows in a fairly upright fashion, gaining a rounded form over time.  There are two ornamental features that make this a standout hydrangea.  The leaves are larger in size and have a general oval shape, coming to a point at the end.  The leaves are variegated, with green as the main color and white along the margins.  The flowers form in large, flat headed clusters.  The flowers can change in color, depending on the ph level of the soil.  The flowers tend to have a blue color when planted in acidic soils and are pink in alkaline soils.  The combination of the foliage against the beautiful flowers creates a wonderful plant for your landscape.

Additional Information

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Mariesii Variegata’ grows to a height of 3 to 5 feet, with a similar spread.  It is recommended for climate zones 5 to 9.  It tends to grow best in partial sunlight conditions.  Silver Blue grows best in rich, well drained soils with evenly moist water amounts.  To keep or maintain the blue coloring in the flowers it should be given an acidic fertilizer before any spring growth appears.
