Sideoats Grama -Native
General Information
Sideoats Grama is a great grass that could be used in different areas in your landscape. This is a smaller size plant, growing to 2.5 feet in height. This is a native grass, with a range from Canada to South America. It was quite prevalent on the tall grass prairies of old, and still is present in many areas today. This grass has enough ornamental qualities to standout in a larger landscape area or as an accent plant. This grass works well in naturalized areas, whether covering a large area or for erosion control. This plant grows in an upright, spreading fashion. The leaves grow in clump form, spreading through seeding and through rhizomes. The leaves are around 8 inches long and one quarter inch wide. They green-blue through the growing season, turning tan in the fall. This foliage can take on a reddish color in the fall. On stems rising above the foliage, small red to pinkish flowers form in the summer, ripening to tan or white seed pods in the fall. These seed pods are prized by birds in the fall and winter. The grass is well liked by livestock and wild animals in the growing season.
