General Information

Rustica Rubra Magnolia is a beautiful tree that works well in any area of your landscape.  The flowers are the best known part of the magnolia, but these trees can have multiple points of interest.  This is a smaller sized ornamental tree, not more than 20 feet in height.  This tree tends to grow initially narrow oval in shape becoming more fully rounded over time.  The foliage grows densely on the branches, providing a nice canopy cover for birds.  The leaves are oval in shape, and are quite large.  They emerge green in color, before turning yellow-brown in the fall.  In the early spring, flowers buds in a deep red color appear.  They open to a cupped shape mid-spring with pink exterior petals and white in the interior.  After the flowers, bright red fruits form, providing a nice food source for the birds.

Additional Information

Magnolia x soulangiana ‘Rustica Rubra’ grows to a height of 15 to 20 feet, with a similar spread.  It is recommended for climate zones 5 to 9.  It can grow in full to partial sunlight.  Rustica Rubra grows best in well drained soils with moderate amounts of moisture, but can tolerate somewhat lesser conditions.  It does not have any major insect or disease issues.
