Description

Ruby Port Columbine

General Information

Ruby Port Columbine is a great plant that could fit well in different areas of your landscape.  This plant would look great in borders, flower beds or naturalized areas.  Hummingbirds love this flower, making it a great choice for a viewing area.  This plant is formed as a clumping, bushy, mounded perennial.  The foliage of this plant provides a great backdrop for the beautiful flowers.  The leaves are biternate, with three separate sections, each of those sections with three rounded lobes.  They emerge maroon in the spring, maturing to green as the season continues.  The flowers sit atop stems above the foliage.  The double flowers have a deep maroon color, with light yellow stamens in the center of the flower.  This flower blooms in the spring, in April and May.

Additional Information

Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Ruby Port’ grows to a height of 2 to 3 feet, with a spread of 1 to 2 feet.  It is recommended for climate zones 3 to 8.  It can grow in full to partial sun.  Ruby Port grows best in well drained soils, with moderate amounts of moisture.  This plant can be trimmed near the ground by mid-summer after the flowers are gone and the foliage begins to decline.  It has susceptibility to leaf miner.
